For many years after World War II, the move into suburbia and easy
access to food at the supermarket took the longtime tradition of gardening out
of the home. Many people who pay attention to reasons behind the obesity
epidemic in this country note that as people lost access to fresh fruits and
vegetables, they were substituting those with less healthier choices.
Fortunately, in recent years there has been a resurgence in farmer's
markets and especially in home gardens. Catherine Sergautis herself began
planting her own garden at her home with the help of her husband, Ryan Maillet.
This has been a great way that the two of them can bond together while also
helping to add very healthy food options to their diet. Nothing beats fresh
fruits and veggies!
Recently, Catherine Sergautis has been including her daughter, Katelyn
Maillet in the family gardening work. While Katelyn is still very young – about
2 years old – she has fun helping her parents digging holds and planting fruits
and vegetables. Catherine Sergautis has been impressed at how interested her
daughter is in the activities outside in the garden. She's very happy about it
though.
Both Catherine Sergautis
and her husband, Ryan Maillet take the time to educate their daughter about
what fruits and veggies they are planting and harvesting from their garden.
They are very relieved to know that Katelyn loves the healthy food from their
garden. They credit involving their daughter in the work with her love of the
food. Sometimes parents have a very hard time getting their children to eat
healthy, but that isn't the case for Catherine Sergautis and her daughter!
Catherine Sergautis plans to continue gardening with her husband, Ryan
Maillet and daughter. It's a great family activity and it improves their health
by giving them access to the freshest foods you can get!
