YMCA or Young Men's Christian Association is a worlwide organization
which reaches upwards of 60 million people. YMCAs were started in London in the
1840s and have been in operation around the world ever since. YMCAs have become
areas for the community to meet and also for the community to get fit and
healthy. Many of the larger YMCAs in bigger cities and towns will often put on
a variety of events for familes, kids, and adults.
Catherine Sergautis has been a member at her local London YMCA (on
Siunningdale Road) for many years. Two years ago she had her daughter, Katelyn
Maillet. Needing to get back in shape from the pregnancy and all of the extra
work required with having a newborn, Catherine Sergautis started going to the
YMCA more often.
It only took about three months before Catherine Sergautis realized she
had a great opportunity for her daughter at the YMCA. There, Katelyn learned
how to swim from an early age - only three months old! Catherine Sergautis is
very happy she made the decision to bring her daughter at such an early age.
She loves being in the water now that she is 2. Most kids are terrified of the
water and only learn swimming skills much later in their life.
Another reason that Catherine Sergautis is glad she started bringing
her daughter Katelyn to the local YMCA is because of the all of the social
interaction she gets. Katelyn has been able to play with play groups in the
gym. She gets to play with kids her age in a safe environment while Catherine
Sergautis can do other things like exercise and work out.
In the future, Catherine Sergautis hopes that Katelyn continues to
enjoy swimming at the YMCA. Swimming would be a great sport for her daughter to
get more involved in. Right now it's all about fun and exercise, but it could
turn into a sport that takes her far in life!
